About 19,000 people live in the area bounded by Casino Road, Airport Road and Evergreen Way, making it one of the most densely populated parts of Everett. One-quarter of those people live in poverty, and the poverty rate for children is 35.7 percent, more than double the countywide rate of 14 percent.

More recently, she became a member of the leadership council for the Casino Road Initiative, which is managing a $700,000 grant under the oversight of the Community Foundation of Snohomish County. The partnership between Connect Casino Road and Sound Experience is “essential” in getting families involved, because if a family doesn’t know about the opportunity, they can’t sign up, Guillen said. His organization is already connected with families, and it knows how to communicate with them and help them navigate the application.
